thunderstorms

The smell of oil paint
drying in the freezing air
and the stink
of a paraffin heater.
Fimgerless gloves
and cold-reddened fingertips
manipulating ox hair brushes
moving paint
a carnival of abstract forms
trying to put a face
to the dread inside.
