heat hazethe sky an obscure tint of blue

abandoned since childhood
brought the reality of death
to an unprepared mind
the steel bars rusted
paint peeling
from the metal sides
the wheel forlorn and caked with time.
What joys this hamster brought
to a small child
Hark! Is that the squeak
on the turning wheel?
