25th February 2020

window prisms
rainbows skitter across the wall
chirping sparrows

I was surprised
when the compost bin
disgorged its contents
over the side entrance path.
Tea bags and eggshells
and the sticky remnants of breakfast
from three months ago.
Less so this morning
when I empty the compost waste from the kitchen
and a fat, brown rat stares at me
whiskers twitching
and an eggshell crown
perched between his flat ears.
He heads off to the gap beneath the shed
where the field mice used to live
until the cat got them.
