26th September 2020

through the study window
the smell of coffee brewing

“Alright, lovely?”
The woman who steps out
looks like every jolly mother
in every period fifties film,
the sort of woman who can pop out
a dozen kids while baking an apple pie
and butchering a chicken.
“That’s a nasty crack on the head,”
she pulls on a pair of nitrile gloves
and an N-95 face mask
“You did yourself a right mischief.”
I smile at her,
though since she’s wearing the mask
I can’t tell if she’s smiling back.
Her uncrinkled eyes suggest not.
“I feel fine.”
