"Ginger nut, Fell in the cut
and frightened all the fishes..."
I've forgotten the rest of the childhood taunt
but it followed me for eleven years
before I changed schools.
Afterwards I was despised for different reasons;
being clever, being freckled; being fat;
and never being one of the 'right crowd'
until my mom died
and I became 'that hippie.'
