filtering through yellow leaves
neighbour's barking

we used to make boats
to sail down the brook
in the little wooded pathway opposite the school.
linking Tanyard Lane with Bear Hill.
Leaf boats, lollipop boats
wooden boats made in our dad's garages
with nonsense names like 'Radar Spanner;'
each an hour's entertainment
on the way home from school.
It's gone now, tamed by a culvert
with housing on the adjacent fields
and the kids no longer sail boats there
unless their boats are empty vapes
and cigarette buts dropped through the drain covers.
