filtering through the trees
scrubbing the shower

three pounds of elderberries
boiled with a little water
mashed and left to cool;
becomes a litre of liquid after straining,
added to a kilo of sugar, boiled
set into a rolling boil for fifteen minutes
and poured into oven-hot jars.

I write of litres and kilogrammes
but then it feels strange to write of minutes
because Time was never decimalised.
