I didn't understand that we were poor;
we lived in a big house with a garden
even if the rooms were mostly bare
and the bare floors were warmed by threadbare rugs,
our clothes from jumble sales.
I wated the toys that other kids had:
board games and football cards;
doll houses and air rifles
but "money didn't grow on trees"
and if I whined too much Dad told me
"put a sock in it," or "Go clean a chimney."
