howling wind
battering the clouds away

For Sarah Salway
The crunch of this carrot
on a cold, December morning
as I sip from a hot mug of fresh tea
in a house that is warm and dry
with enough to eat and clothes on my back.
The soft fur on the dog's neck
as she leans her head forward
accepting my attention;
the patience of the much larger dog
when she loses her temper,
standing on her hind legs to bite his face.
The generosity of my partner
to pay the electricity bill,
providing light and computer power
and still loving me after all these years.
The newsletter of an old friend
for reminding me that no matter how worried I might be
over my health or my overdraft
that there is still so much to be thankful for
and even when the whole world is going mad,
at the End of Everything
a dandelion seed will push through concrete
and embrace the light of the universe.
