Dad's routine, as regular as a working day
undershirt and trousers, buttoned to his waist
but with his braces hanging down making there a frame
for buttocks while he fried the bacon to his taste.
Washing at the kitchen sink with Fairy to be clean
armpits, neck and ears before the open garden door
then nip out to his van to radio his team
pretending he was on the road an hour from before.
Work-issued blue shirt with the emblem on his chest
not buttoned for he didn't like the tie
That was just for management, when in his Sunday best
he'd sit inside his roadside van, an effort to stay dry.
Ten minutes on the downstairs loo, and five to feed the dogs
Work the day shift and the night. Get paid for sawing logs.
