Remember all that figure work I drew?

naked women posing before fires?

I know you thought the models that I knew

were prostitutes and objects of desire.

In one sense you were absolutely right

and coax I did the lust held deep below

but you were wrong in snipes and accusations light

and learned that my desire was to grow.

For every laboured drawing held a sample

that what I saw inside myself was clear

although your view of life had been to trample

on all that my devotion had held dear.

And finally we split because you wanted to be free

of the version of myself that I felt was truly me.
