Fecundity in Decomposition

his spine, reticulated

with time-worn crevices

and age-shrunken skin, and  as ,

rises like a triumphal arch

pulling with it ribs and lungs

distorting the cavity beneath

and bringing the chest into concavity.

He adapts his bed,

sleeping almost upright,

cut foam to support pencil-thin bones

his breath dragged through an open mouth

with the rattle of death

forever lurking at the edge.

Around him, shadows beckon

and the ghost of his long-dead brother

smiles as he holds out one hand,

a warm welcome for an old soul

destined for the flames.
