endless lines of drying laundry

in brick-enclosed backyards

where voices echo from red canyons

and kids throw stones at milk bottles.

The number 37 goes down the hill

with the fug of woodbines on the top deck.

Flat caps and Morning Stars

and the hacking coughs of miners.
