sunshine
through the apple trees
in my memory

apple tree
bare and twisted
the last few leaves
and one, solitary apple.
I killed it
building raised beds beneath,
recovering land from a bramble-strewn slope
anf pollarding its huge size.
If I'd known the result,
I would have left it alone;
sacrificed that part of the garden
to delicious red-fleshed apples.
