dreary morning
segueing into October

burning steel wool
brings back a memory;
My parents bought me Scalextric one Christmas
(a really useless toy for a kid
who spends all their time alone)
and my dad asked me if I was happy with the gift
and I said how excited I was.
The he said: "You won't care about the set your mum
is playing with in the back room, then,"
There was my mom,
smiling over a huge box
of second-hand cars and track.
