first flurries of snow
making my heart sink

Mom was afraid of electric blankets:
too many stories on the news
about people catching fire in their beds
burning to death while they slept.
She still liked the concept;
a step above hot water bottles
and coal warming pans,
but she'd take the whole thing odd the bed
before getting in herself.
