It amazes me now
that at sixteen, seventeen
I would hitchhike the country
from Birmingham to London,
to Edinburgh, to Glasgow
meeting friends, going to concerts;
sleeping rough by choice.
This was before mobile phones,
before tachometers,
before serial killers and the rise of kidnapping
and human trafficking
(that went on everywhere,
but not, as far as we knew, in England')
Dad would drop me at the M6
and not expect to hear from me
until a week or two later
