You were stability within my life
working hard and caring for your loved ones
but your world shattered when you lost your wife
and left you with an empty heart at once.
I never saw you cry but on that day
when we sent our mother to the final burn
something broke inside, and never did you say
her name again except in dismay churn.
You did your best to raise a teenage son
although you had to mock their sense of worth
for you were very much a man begun
with sarcastic comments cloaked in English mirth.
But though disease took hold and made you fall
you were the best a father's son could call.
