Trying to relax

Oh! That needs weeding, too!

constant distraction

a carpet bought to warm his freezing feet

displeases most the shut-in of the house

who can't abide the pattern or the heat

although they tolerate it for my spouse

until the dogs track bits of soil and chew their bones

and leave it rucked in an untidy mess

for now it feels like walking upon stones

and roots of trees and then I must confess

that even I grew tired of vacuuming the rug

and took it up the leave it in the rain

until it washed away the black dog hair and mud

and showed itself as bright and clean again.

  I've cut it into strips and laid it down

  as weed suppression after I have mown.
