Alvechurch 1984
All through childhood, I walked these pastured fields
along the edge where timothy and hemlock grew;
where footpaths ran 'twixt lines of wheat revealed
the hidden paths where foxes rabbits slew.
But now the landscape changed within a single year
and fields are fenced away with wood and wire;
where earth is scraped away from the hills I held so dear
and the stink of unshorn sheep upon a pyre.
For progress demands traffic, and traffic demands roads:
a motorway to carve through Middle Land
driven by the government and economic goads
and under-table payments changing hands.
Gone now is the shepherd's hut where I would ply my wares
to furtive men in twilight gloom with dark and hungry stares.
