I find it very intriguing that the churches are surrounded by the graveyards. This is obviously something that occurred long ago and not an everyday occurrence since we always travel with you on your walks through a graveyard (without the church).
I can't think of any churches here in Canada that are surrounded by gravestones. Of course - we don't have any churches as old as you have.
I second aims, sort of. We tend to have graveyards behind churches but not around them, sometimes off to one side or the other. Close but not too close. The dead are all well and good so long as we don't have to think about them too often. ;)

People were always buried on consecrated ground - the area around a church.
