ladies
on the seafront
waling a talking.
One younger, long hair, stocky
using her hands to illustrate points
an involved monologue.
Her companion nods, smiles,
checks her phone again
Sensible handbag on a shoulder strap,
sensible hair, sensible shoes.
We were like that once,
you and I
when the years stretched ahead
with infinite possibility
and the water lapped the sand at our feet.
