the rain stoppedleft us a murky day

Nana's outhouse
lit by a paraffin lamp;
a soft glow at the end of the yard
with a tiny bit of carpet
and the waxy paper
that didn't seem to help.
If you were lucky,
Da would've cut up a newspaper
which did a better job
but left grey smudges on your bum
and in the winter
you had to break the ice first
and take a kettle with you to flush.
