brambles
reaching over the path
needle sharp stems
ready to poke and prick
but among the clouds of whirring bees
the sweet delight of blackberries
where a child licks handfuls
of sticky, black fruit
sweeter than molasses
then slips,
dismay in his voiceless cry
over the steep Torquay cliff.
His parent's screams as I pass by
thinking
a fool and his mummy
are soon parted.
