a brief infatuation
let's call her Linda
because fifty years is a long time
for the one day you were in love.
She was the granddaughter of Mrs Morris,
the lady who lived next door
who gave us eggs from her chickens
and let me roam her extensive garden
and single field beyond.
Linda was the older woman
eight or nine to my seven
and she could climb the crab apple tree
better than any boy
and sang songs about her mother
sitting on the lavatory
She was rugged, beautiful
and I was in love for days.
