28th November 2020

misty morning
car headlights pierce the gloom
grey and silent

We were never poor
growing up in the seventies;
there was enough to eat
and clothes on our backs
and if we never went on holiday
that was okay.
We could roam the countryside
and ask strangers for a glass of water
or an apple if we were hungry;
there were no paedophiles to fear
and almost no cars
to run us over
and we would run to the gate
to see a car drive past
and toot-toot
over the humpback bridge.
