Summer 1969
my sister sunbathing on the back lawn
trying to catch a tan
under the English sky.
I'm six, and she's tired of playing with me
so I'm looking for jumping spiders
on the sun-warmed, corrugated iron walls
of the old chicken shed.
Inside, the webs of house spiders
hang long and dusty;
bloated bodies staring
from cracks in the shuttered walls.
Mum has promised us an ice-cream sandwich
if we leave her be
until she's finished the housework
but there are cobwebs in the dark,
clock-ticking shadows of the hall
and she's terrified of the watchers.
