neighbours
used to complain about his bonfires
which he'd light with the contents of the dustbin
believing they'd charge him money
if it was over-filled.
Then he'd pile on leaves and hedge-clippings
the weeds from his large garden
the wood from trees he fell
and cover it all
with grass clippings from the orchard
and keep it going for days
and sometimes weeks.
He didn't care about the moaning
it was his land
and his house had been there
long before the others were built
in the post-war housing boom
and besides, he'd watched his friends burning
when he was deployed in Malaysia
and the smell of a garden bonfire
could never be as bad as that.
