dull sky
the puddles of overnight rain
full of sparrows

Half a kilometer, three metres high
an annual week off work
spent cutting the hedges
around his garden.
My father with three long extension leads
from the kitchen to his clippers
and the ubiquitous bonfire.
Holly, hawthorn and privet,
his work hampered by thick gloves
and the heavy canvas groundsheet
he hauled it all away on.
