heavy rain
the dog wants attention

the pantry,
untouched since Mum died,
still contained her preserves.
Dozens of jars
jams; pickles; fruits in alcohol;
It kept me going for years
while I was in college and beyond.
Hundreds of bottles of home-made wine
dating back ten years, twenty;
every one matured to perfection,
the heady brew reminding me of christmas,
and a bottle was opened when we returned
from Midnight Mass.
