just an inch or so
peppered with dogprints

with teachers after school;
backgammon with Mrs Saunders,
the school secretary.
She's playing white
and in a moment of insanity
pops a counter into her mouth
thinking it was a mint.
She apologises profusely
but decades between pandemics
it didn't matter a jot.
