silent night
four lads wrecking the bus shelter

boxing day
when the mania of christmas
recedes until next year.
Dad would allow himself the day off,
other than checking on his greenhouse,
and wear his Sunday Polo shirt
and his best cable-knit jumper,
though it was business as usual for mom,
as she busied making a cooked breakfast
in the smoke-filled kitchen
with the dogs hanging about
hoping for the bacon rinds.
Cold turkey sandwiches
and the high-pitcher hiss
as stones skitter across the frozen canal
and the cawing of crows
as they alight on the apple tree
calling for scraps.
