going home from school

gave the occasional variation

by changing the bus stop.

Fastest was the at the Red Lion;

a twenty minute walk up Tanyard Lane

and Callow Hill Road to the top.

Or the following one

a walk across the footpath

then on to the canal

and back past the poplars.

Or the one before; up School Lane,

then the footpath to the church

then down Bear Hill, Snake Lane,

to the corner where Tanyard met Callow.

Or longer still, if the weather was nice,

left after the church and past the station;

onto the canal path at the marina

then thirty minutes across the back paths to home

and get the key to the back door for the hut

to a pair of suddenly happy dogs.
