squeaky shoes on rubber mats
the smell of cleaning fluid
competes with turpentine.

radio one in another room
the murmur of voices
cigarette smoke on the air
the roar of distant traffic
on the ring-road far below.

a cacophony of voices
hammering, sawing;
the staccato coughs of a staple gun
someone swearing
hot wax and coffee

oil paint wet and glistening
blocks of colour stare down
figures larger than life.

someone whistling
the scream of ripped canvas
