a dearth of birds
under a leaden sky
empty feeder

the old chap behind him
in a supermarket till queue
counts our pennies onto the conveyor belt.
His heart breaks
as he moves the next customer sign
to cover the old man's bread.
"I've got you covered."
No tricks
just a kind gesture
and a silent, damning indictment
on the state of society.
