chilling day
promoting the Nazi party
our son's father

a moment of fear
on a late night walk
as a group of teenagers
through insults my way.
Nothing really changes;
as a youth I endured hostility
and the occasional beating up
just for being slightly different:
because I wore second-hand clothes;
because I was poor
because I has red hIR
because I was gay;
because I went home for lunch
because we had a huge garden but no furniture.
Fifty years later,
I have less fear of the violence
but there's no legal recourse
when hate crimes against queer folk
are lauded in the news
