cold night
in the dog days of summer
hacking cough

I only remember one birthday party
set in the back room so rarely used,
a fire lit specially for the occasion
and six or seven of the people from school -
I hesitate to call them friends
because I had too few of those-
musical chairs, pass-the-parcel
and Mum made a cake
with "Happy Birday" in pink icing.
I was sent to bed at nine pm
while my guests partied on
until their parents came.
