14th December 2024

Walking Dogs

I pulled my glove off with my teeth

to get the doggie's stinker

but I bit down far too hard

and nearly ate my finger.

gilding the edges of sleep

Sonnet for Consumerism

this last month of the year purports to merry

but brings more misery than can be seen

when expectation demands each penny

and sliding further into debt, with lean

and heavy heart we strive to make ends meet

not helped at all by those with corp'rate greed

and though I've made a stack of cards to greet

the season tide, the Royal Mail has need

of more and more from postage costs and stamps

have risen faster than the inflation's tread

I can't afford to send ephemeral lamps

and wish you only all my love instead.

Though if you visit me in Chesterfield,

an artist's card and wine my hand will yield.
