rats
digging tunnels under the earth
accessing the compost bins.
In doing so,
they churn the compost
making the kitchen waste
into beautiful earth.
In our seven-year history,
you were the rat
in our relationship compost;
selfish and greedy
but to eat the best parts out of me
you left the rest fertile
and tilled to await new love
and made me better than I ever was.
