draughty house
with a fireplace in every room
none of them in use,
and leaded windows
where the frost would build on the inside;
a thick layer you could scrape away
to peer out on a winter morning.
Clay tiled floors downstairs,
with gaps under the doors,
guarded by stuffed cloth sausage dogs
and endlessly wafted by curtains
hung over the frame;
heavy cotton paisley sold by the yard
