two magpies
creeping past the houses
morning sun

every year
he'd take a week off work
just to cut the hedges.
Holly and hawthorn
handled with heavy gloves
and petrol driven hedgecutters.
One corner of the orchard
became a permanent bonfire
sending clouds of white smoke
over the neighbourhood.
three metre high walls of green
became pristine blocks
and he went back to work aching
and ready for a rest.
