pip-pip-pipping his horn

leaving school ten minutes early
the bus already at the Hunt End stop
and a swift connection
at Redditch town centre.
I could be home in under an hour
after the long walk up from the Red Lion
and have the house to myself for a short while.
A mug of tea and a good novel
in the dying light of a fading sun;
then cook dinner for my father
and settle to homework.
