heavy rain
washing away the snow
hot dog pee

my father
always washed at the kitchen sink
reserving baths to once a week
because hot water was expensive.
A copper kettle on the Aga
was all the hot water needed
for daily ablutions
and if we wanted to heat another room
we had to cut the wood for the fireplace
and take responsibility.
A warm bed
was an extra blanket
and an overcoat on top,
scraping a hole in the window ice
to look outside in the morning.
