sunshine
after torrential rain

I hang my skins
on pegs by the front door,
hidden from callers and passers-by.
The one I use in public
has the most wear on it:
polite and kind, deferential
to those in authority;
the one who gives sweeties
to teenagers with knives.
The one I use at home:
kind, helpful...
loving and accepting;
and the one I wear in private;
a self-loathing lesion
of despair for the world
and the future of humanity.
