the washing machine packs up

Goldfish lasted longer then;
a fifth birthday present
still alive and happy
when I left for uni'
I bought the child a pair
that lived in the bathroom for a while,
swimming in their chalice of desperation
until buried in a Barbie box
after a couple of years.
Why do we treat life so casually?
Luckily, she was better with babies
but I preferred the goldfish.
