I.II
Her sweat-soaked bedding offers meagre heat
as gusting wind make plastic glazing billow
while overhead opposing dark clouds meet
and drifts of snow on concrete ledges pillow.
Is it influenza, AIDS or just a bug
that's going round that makes her feel so sick
or something sent her by an unknown god
to clog her throat and make her mucus thick?
Delirium brings dreams of blood and woe
her sickly frame is wracked with ache and bile
nightmares come by day where dreams afeared to go
inside her head she treads a solitary mile.
A twelve-inch portable and monochrome TV
gives glimpses to the world beyond her door,
through crust obscuréd eyes she can barely see
the screen from her filthy mattress on the floor.
