She bends the knee like she was taught in youth
to give honour and allegiance up to those
who made themselves superior in truth
by reasons of divinity or birth.
What choice has she but to accept the quest
with prior deniers seeming put to death:
she knows not if the tenant did his best
and chose instead to walk right off the roof.
At least if she agrees she will be spared
and follow not his lead of final leap;
in later times perhaps she'll be compared
to Pontius Pilate, given time to weep.
