overcast skymelting away the night frost
weak sunshine

a lily
laid across a dark stone
half hidden
under grass objecting to the intrusion
a smooth piece of jet
reflecting the sable sky
no markings
no hint of what lay beneath.
a small grave
at the back of the garden
dug with bare hands at daybreak
the box inside
placed with a layer of salt
between it and the earth,
between it and the grass
untended for years.
